Native to India, Ayurveda is the ancient medicinal form, developed during the Vedic times, about 5000 years ago.
Ayurveda is the ancient Indian medical science, the origin of which can be traced back to the Vedas, which are the oldest available classics of the world. The word 'Ayur' means life, while 'Veda' means science. Therefore, Ayurveda literally means the 'Science of Life'. It is not just a medicinal system, but also a way of life. According to the Science of Life, the structural aspect of every individual comprises five elements - earth, water, fire, air and space. It explains the do's and don'ts one has to follow which favours the well being of an individual to lead a healthy, happy and comfortable life both physically and mentally. Ayurveda emphasizes on prevention of diseases and rejuvenation of body systems.
Ayurveda combines physical, psychological and spiritual therapies in an approach to health, that has addressed itself to the fundamental principles of good health and longevity.Ayurveda is based on a system of Tridosha or Three Humours which classifies all individual constitutions of people, diseases, herbs and other non-herbal remedies and therapies according to whether they are Vata (air or nerve oriented),Kapha (water or mucoid type) or Pitta (fire type). Kerala's suitable climate, natural abundance of herbs and medicinal plants are best suited for Ayurveda treatments. The Ayurveda treatments and medicines have no side effect because the medicines are made from natural herbs.
This Indian system of medicine has laid down principles and methods of treatment for various diseases including chronic illnesses where there is no definite curative treatment, and symptomatic relief is the only existing treatment option.
